Venice is like Disneyland - charming, compact, no cars, shopping, throngs of people and a fantasy land. It even has themed rides: iconic gondolas, waterbuses, water taxis, and private boats. The islands in Venice are also unique with it's own flavor ranging from glass blowing in epic proportions to old ladies making fancy lace to beach lounging along the Adriatic coast. The canals do bring out your senses. When we checked into our B&B, I make a beeline to check out the bathroom (to see if it passes my hygenic tests). It was clean, but smelled like it has just been recently "used." I walked over to the open window, looked down below, and the canal was just 2 feet below. I was told that as it gets into the warmer months, the canal starts to smell funky. They don't mention that in the guidebooks...
