My heart skipped a beat as we approached the Austrian border towards Hallstatt. Then I quickly realized I didn't need to a passport because Czech Republic and Austria have open borders as part of the Schengen Agreement. Note to self: ALWAYS carry your passport while traveling abroad.
Evidence of human dwelling was found dating back as early as 8,000 years ago. Salt mining was the industry and it reminded me of scenes from the of the mines of Moria in Lord of the Rings. Touring the mine requires a 1,000 feet trek up the mountain or you can take the handy funicular. Taking in views of the lakeside town nesting against a backdrop of mountains, it's hard to fathom that this entire town, except 2 buildings burned down in 1750 caused by a kitchen fire.
You don't have to spend a single euro to enjoy Hallstatt as the town itself is the real star.
