Adventures in Salzburg, Austria

SALZBURG

"The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music!" Situated at foothills of the Bavarian Alps lies Salzburg and the countryside that inspired The Sound of Music, and birthplace of Mozart. While Americans are fascinated by The Sound of Music, the locals can't understand what the hoopla is all about. Like many German cities Salzburg was bombed in WWII, except the old town where the fortress Hohensalzburg on top of the hill lies, survived. Built in the 12th century and so foreboding that it withstood invasion for 1000 years until big bully Napoleon came to town and Salzburg surrendered with no resistance.Today, it stands as an empty shell with a few semi-furnished rooms and an interesting museum for visitors to tour. The courtyards of the fortress provides commanding views of the Bavarian Alps. These hills are truly alive!

Horse Baths

This is where they would bathe their horses - an 18th century "car wash"

Hohensalzburg Fortress

Built in 1100, it survived any war ravaging for nearly 1000 years.

Fortress Window

A 12th century pre-cursor to the modern day double pane windows.

An ornate ceiling of what was once the reception room

Medieval toilet

It was considered state-of-the-art back in the 12th century!

Garbage Chute

Situated near the kitchen, refuse was 'washed" down this chute through the hole and out the castle, dropping 100 ft down.

Refuse from the fortress kitchen probably ended up down here when dumped out the wall hole.
