Adventures Down the Amalfi Coast

I had taken a Dramamine tablet just in case.

The wildly scenic coastal drive along the Amalfi coast with hairpin turns can make you think you’re driving around in circles. The road is not wide enough for two-way traffic but somehow it just works. Imagine if you had to drive this road after dark; there are no lights - only the moon and your faith as your guide.

Here, the drive itself is the star of the show. The three major towns on this route - Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello are the perfect scenic stops for a lunch or cafe break, people watching and shopping.

The stretch of the road from Sorrento to Positano. Remote beaches and fishing villages can be seen from the road, although many of the beaches are inaccessible.

A remote picturesque fishing village.

Positano and other towns along the Amalfi coast are built against sheer cliffs like this. How do you build amongst cliffs? By cutting out terraces.

If you're thinking of retiring in Europe, take care of your knees and accept the fact that stairs are a way of life here.

Amalfi town and its beautiful cathedral

Ravello, the highest of the three main towns along the Amalfi coast.

Some of these buildings are palaces turned hotels. The little opening of the green door appears unassuming until you step in...(see below photo)

….walk through that little green door, through the lobby and find this courtyard.
